Edgartown is the Island’s most formal village — white Greek Revival houses with black shutters, brick sidewalks, and a harbour full of masts. Homes for sale here run from in-town captain’s houses within walking distance of Main Street to beach houses in Katama and estates along the Edgartown Great Pond. The village was built on nineteenth-century whaling money and the grid of streets behind the harbour still shows it. Chappaquiddick lies a few hundred yards across the water, reached by the On Time ferry, and holds the most private shorefront on the Island. To the south, Katama runs down to South Beach and three miles of open Atlantic surf. Edgartown carries more inventory than any other town on Martha’s Vineyard, across the widest range of prices, and it is where most buyers begin.
